At Langar Church of England Primary School, we know that well-fed, well-nourished children make for happier, healthier and better learners. Lunchtime is one of our favourite parts of the school day, particularly for the staff! Our family-style dining approach brings older and younger children together to share meals, enjoy conversation, look after one another and develop good table manners and lifelong social skills. It's a lovely time of day, full of friendship, laughter and good conversation, helping everyone feel settled and ready for a productive afternoon.
Of course, good food is at the heart of a good lunchtime experience. We believe strongly in pupil voice and the British value of democracy, so our children have voted for their favourite school meals! Working closely with our catering provider, Vertas, and our experienced school cook, Mrs Selby, we've created a two-week rolling menu of healthy, nutritious meals that children love. The results have been wonderful: food waste has halved and children's satisfaction with school dinners has increased considerably. Nearly 88% of our children order a hot school meal cooked in our kitchens each day.
Our menus have been approved by Vertas and meet the Department for Education's school food standards. We keep them under review to reflect any changes to national requirements and nutritional guidance. We're enormously proud of our school meals, not just for the food on the plates, but for the sense of belonging, care and community that grows around the table each day.
