As you were made aware at the start of term, we have implemented a new phonics and reading scheme for EYFS and KS1. We are following the DFE recommended Essential Letters and Sounds scheme to teach phonics and have purchased new reading books and e-books to go alongside it.
Staff have had to undertake training to become familiar with the methods used to teach phonics via Essential Letter and Sounds. Some of the approaches used, such as ‘robot arms’ and the ‘pure’ way the sounds are pronounced have taken some getting used to.
The scheme relies heavily on consistency and repetition which are proven ways of enabling children to learn quickly and remember well. We have seen this impact already after only three weeks!
Having parents on board to support reading at home and further rehearse the sounds learned will enhance children’s learning experience. In order for you to support your children, we are offering you the opportunity to come and find out about the scheme, the approaches used and the reading books that will be sent home.
Mrs Male and Mrs Richardson are going to run a parent workshop for parents of children in classes 1 and 2, on Wednesday 5th October in the hall straight after school. This will last about a half an hour and you can bring your children in to sit with you.
Please return the slip provided on the letter (which will be sent tomorrow) so that we have an idea of numbers attending.
If you are unable to attend, you can find further information about ELS on the English page of our website.
