  • Harvest Festival

Fri 28 Sep 2018 Mrs Brown

It was wonderful to welcome so many parents and grandparents to Harvest Festival this afternoon and to see the great array of produce brought in for The Friary.

We had great fun trying to name the interesting fruit and vegetables that Mrs Turner had brought it. Amongst which were a celeriac, passion fruit and a sweet potato! It reminded us of all the bounteous gifts that God has provided and we thanked Him for this in a prayer led by Canon Gamble.  The service was based around a book that Mrs Turner had shared with us called Mr and Mrs God's Creation Kitchen. We all really enjoyed the story!

  • Farewell Canon Gamble!

    Tue 25 Sep 2018

What a send off! A Star Wars tribute, class collective worship, pass the parcel, her favourite hymns and a service led by our Faith and Values leaders demonstrated to Canon Gamble how special she is to us as a school. Four parents came along to support this event and shared coffee, cake, stories and memories of her past twelve and a half years here with us.

The shape of the curriculum, the format of collective worship, the values that underpin all we do have been strongly influenced by her, and her Christian guidance has been invaluable. Canon Gamble has become a part of the fabric here at school and will be truly missed by us all.

  • Hot Chocolate Friday

    Fri 21 Sep 2018

Last week was our first week of Hot Chocolate Friday, and it was a pleasure to see precise and careful artwork of a Victorian street scene as well as a fantastic version of Going on a Bear Hunt that was full to bursting with descriptive vocabulary and fronted adverbials! We have once again celebrated the academic achievements of children this afternoon who have had a hot chocolate and spent time with Mrs Brown sharing the work they have been nominated for. Mrs Halsall popped in too and it was wonderful for the children to be able to share their work with a wider audience. We saw a wonderfully sculpted humpback whale, some fabulous partionning maths work, clear and concise instructions for how to make a Victorian brick and a perfectly clear explanation of place value in the form of a colourful poster.

I can't wait to see who is nominated next week!

  • Head Lice!

    Wed 19 Sep 2018

We have unwelcome visitors in school again!

(NHS Information) While there's nothing you can do to prevent head lice, you can reduce the risk of lice spreading by wearing long hair tied up and avoiding head-to-head contact. Don't use medicated lotions and sprays to prevent head lice as this can irritate the scalp.

Head lice are small insects, up to 3mm long, and can be difficult to spot. Head lice eggs (nits) are yellow, brown or white (empty shells) and attached to the hair. Head lice sometimes can make your head feel:

    •itchy

•like something is moving in your hair

The only way to be sure someone has head lice is by finding live lice or eggs.

How to get rid of head lice

You can treat head lice without seeing a GP.

Treat head lice as soon as you spot them. You should check everyone in the house and treat them on the same day if they have head lice.

    Wet combing

Lice and nits can be removed by wet combing. This method should be tried first. A Nitty Gritty is an excellent comb for this purpose https://www.nittygritty.co.uk/site/headliceandnits.asp

You can buy a special fine-toothed comb (detection comb) online or from pharmacies to remove head lice and nits.

There will be instructions on the pack to follow, but typically you:

•use the comb on wet or dry hair – although it usually works best on wet hair with conditioner

•comb the whole head of hair, from the roots to the ends

•repeat every few days for 2 weeks

It usually takes about 10 minutes to comb short hair, and 20 to 30 minutes for long, frizzy or curly hair.

    Medicated lotions and sprays

Ask your pharmacist for advice if you have tried wet combing for 2 weeks, but your child still has head lice or nits.

They may recommend using medicated lotions and sprays. These kill head lice in all types of hair, and you can buy them from pharmacies, supermarkets or online.

Head lice should die within a day. Lotions and sprays come with a comb to remove dead lice and eggs.

Some treatments need to be repeated after a week to kill any newly hatched lice.

Check the pack to see if they're OK for you or your child and how to use them.

If lotions or sprays don't work, speak to your pharmacist about other treatments.

Some treatments aren't recommended because they're unlikely to work.

    For example:

    •products containing permethrin

    •head lice "repellents"

    •electric combs for head lice

•tree and plant oil treatments, such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and lavender oil herbal remedies

Whilst there's no need to keep your child off school if they have head lice, we would be grateful if you could ensure the treatment of your child if you see head lice before sending them back in to school as this will help to stop the spread of the parasite.

  • Clubs for the Autumn Term

    Thu 13 Sep 2018

We have started the term immersed in lots of wonderful learning experiences, which your children have taken part in enthusiastically and with big smiles on their faces! We enhance these class based experiences with extra-curricular activities which were shared on a letter you received this week. We are particularly excited to be hosting a gymnastics club for KS1 and yoga and mindfulness for KS2 – both of which we are sharing the cost with you by using our Sports Premium funding. Permission slips have been flooding in but we do have limited places available still. La Jolie Ronde is also a new club being held this term. Mrs Arkley is an experienced French teacher and native French speaker who is looking forward to passing on her language skills to your children. There are also places available in this club for you to sign up for via jacqueline.arkley@ntlworld.com .

The clubs letter is uploaded in the 'Clubs' section of this website so that you can print off a copy if you have lost your original one.

We also have a new baby and toddler music class being held in the school hall by Rattle and Roll. This is held weekly, during term time, on a Thursday at 10.00. It was well attended this morning but still has places available. As well as being a wonderful class for your baby or toddler it is also an opportunity for them to come into school and aide a smooth transition in readiness for when they come here full time! For more information about this class , contact Enquiries@rattleandrollperformance.com

We do hope you and your children enjoy all of all the opportunities on offer.

    Mrs Brown
