  • KS1 - Magical Maths

    Mon 18 Mar 2019

There was mind-reading, fun & games from a certain wizard called Potter, and our 'Maths Cauldron' game this week...

This week was another cracking week of magical maths. In fact, this week was PARTICULARLY magical, as we had a guest appearance from our very own Mathemagician. He had an amazinggg time with the children, and taught them some really exciting stuff!

    Maths WHIZZards

The second activity this week feature some super fun 'maths showdowns' in our Maths WHIZZards game (based on a scene from a famous film about young whizzards!).

Children had to test their speed in this game.

This game helps children with a variety of important areas, including recalling and using addition/subtraction facts up to 100 and telling and writing important times on a clock face. We eventually whittled down to the winning teams, who were very pleased. Well done guys!

    Magic Cauldron

This activity is a great one. It's called the 'Magic Cauldron' and really helps students with the speed of their sums.

They have to pick a card and select another card with the correct answer on. There will be a magic ingredient on the back, which they must add to their cauldron to make a secret potion!

The first to get all the ingredients wins the game! (AND has their very own magic potion...double cool!)

    Time Bomb

A great game for teaching number patterns and basic times tables. The children stand in a circle and must say either 1, 2 or 3 consecutive numbers in a sequence that we give them. The next child then continues on from there, and so on, and so on. When one child reaches the last number in the sequence, they must make a big (pretend) explosion and sit down. We continue until we're left with a champion. We also played this game with times tables! The Mathemagician was very impressed with their little apprentices.

  • KS2 - Magical Maths

Here is the latest news from the club! Watch out for details coming soon as we will be hosting the club again in the summer term.

The second activity this week features some super fun 'maths showdowns' in our Maths WHIZZards game (based on a scene from a famous film about young whizzards!).

Children had to test their speed of calculations in this game.

We use different questions depending on age group, but fractions was the focus of the questions.

    Magic Dice

A game featuring two 12-sided dice, and three 6-sided dice. The children get split into teams, and each team rolls their 12-sided dice to create their 'target'. Using the number they then roll from the 6-sided dice, children can use add, subtract, multiply, divide and even powers (for the older children) to equal their target. There's an opportunity for strategic thinking here, and problem solving - which is fantastic!

  • E-Safety Workshop

    Thu 14 Mar 2019

    Thank you for your support

We recently held an O2 and NSPCC online safety workshop for parents and carers at our school. The hour-long workshop aimed to help parents and carers understand more about their child’s online world and build confidence to have conversations with them about it.

Whether you attended or planned to attend but couldn’t, your views are important. They help O2 and the NSPCC improve the experience and impact of the workshops for parents and carers joining them in the future. Please take a few minutes to complete a short online survey about your experience. The survey can be accessed here: www.nspcc.org.uk/ParentO2feedback

Don’t forget this isn’t the end of your online safety journey. Children need continual help learning how to navigate the risks and dangers online. Having regular conversations with your child is the most important way to help. And it’s never too early to start.

If you need any further support or guidance, check out the website pages and step-by step guides online, call the O2 and NSPCC Online Safety Helpline on 0808 800 5002, or pop into your local O2 store for help from a Guru.

We’re committed to providing a comprehensive service to help keep children safe. Please visit www.nspcc.org.uk to find out more about our work and how you could be involved in supporting us. Thank you so much for your support.

  • Football Team News

    Wed 13 Mar 2019
Congratulations to our football team who won 4-2 in a match against Flintham. This is the first of our 'small school' matches organised by Mr Zisaruk-Gibson. The children wore the new kits, bought by money donated by John Deere. The kits display the Guide Dogs logo to demonstrate our gratitude to Mr Bloor who organised the sponsor.
  • Booth House - The Dogs Trust

    Mon 11 Mar 2019

The children have had a wonderful day learning about dogs from The Dogs Trust today. Sarah began the day with a whole school assembly and then worked with each class providing information and activities to inform them about a variety of topics from vicious dogs to dog smuggling and importation.

  • World Book Day

    Thu 07 Mar 2019

We have had the most wonderful World Book Day! It was launched yesterday with a visit from the author Rachel Greaves who has written a series of books about Ruffle the Rail Dog. She captivated the children with her puppets and dramatic storytelling. Today we hosted our KS1 friends from Gunthorpe while KS2 went to their school for an afternoon of creative, reflective, sensory and collaborative activities inspired by Rachel's books.  This followed a book quiz this morning which the children enjoyed in their house groups.

  • Catering Team Nomination

    Fri 01 Mar 2019

We nominated out catering team for a recognition award and wanted to share it with you :

Our catering team are amazing! Vanessa and Annette are very much a part of the Langar family and are thought of in that way by staff, pupils and parents.

Vanessa and Annette are so much more than cooks. They are incredibly accommodating and flexible both within the role, such as managing children with dietary requirements or even liaising with parents who are concerned about a child’s personal tastes, and outside of the role; catering for themed days (such as a Victorian day), the Christmas Fair and community dinners as part of Christmas dinner. At this present moment we are hosting Chinese teachers as part of Nottinghamshire Maths Hub and have accommodated up to 50 teachers a day from other schools who have come to observe maths lessons. Vanessa and Annette have been so helpful with this. Sorting out hot water and drinks, organising cups to be put out and then washed up. Their contribution have made the experience run smoothly for our pupils and staff and has ensured our guests have felt warmly welcomed to our school.

Ellie in year 6 said, ‘Mrs Selby knows me really well. She knows I don’t like potatoes and cooks rice or pasta for me instead.’ And Meg pointed out that ‘Mrs Selby remembers what my favourite meal is! She always tells me if when it’s vegetarian sausage roll and magic chocolate pudding.’ In the midst of a crisis they remain cheerful whilst finding a solution. When the gas went down, they did a dash to Lidl and sorted out a wonderful picnic lunch for children of sandwiches, salad, fruit and a muffin!

Children speak highly of the dinner service here at Langar, both in regards to the food provided, the set-up of lunchtime and the staff. Vanessa and Annette are well known to the children as they fulfil a role within the dinner service as well as in the preparation of the meals. Ben remarked that, ‘Mrs Daws is so kind because she always gives me seconds if I am not full.’

Dinner here is a family service and this is favoured by our school community who love the family values that this instils. The set up encourages children to be kind, caring and fair, setting an example to other children on the table, this behaviour is also modelled by the catering team.

Vanessa gives freely of her time to provide cooking sessions for very child in school across the course of the year through our Let’s Get Cooking sessions that she runs as a team with one of our HLTAs. This is really appreciated by staff, children and parents. The children benefit enormously from this, learning about a healthy diet and recipes that they can easily replicate at home.

Vanessa and Annette really deserve to be recognised for the work they do here and the positive contribution they make to school life.
