  • DFE Laptops

    Fri 29 Jan 2021

As you will have seen in the media, the government made a commitment to provide devices for schools to ensure no child was disadvantaged by a lack of technology to access home learning. We built a package of remote learning that did not rely fully on having a device to support this mission.

I am delighted to share with you that we have been allocated five laptops by the DFE. Four of these have been delivered to school and we are awaiting the fifth. These are fully set up and waiting for children to use.

We want to lend these laptops to families who most need it. We will allocate these laptops by appealing for two groups of people to come forward:

Families with more than two children trying to share a device.

Families who do not have a laptop or tablet and have been accessing the internet on a phone.

Please make yourselves known by emailing head@langar.notts.sch.uk. We truly want to support you by ensuring these laptops are given to the right children.

Here is what some attendees of our first Disco said:

“I never realised dancing in my bedroom with a bunch of complete strangers could be so fun! An opportunity to set some mood lighting, whip out a few dusty disco props and throw some slinky shapes, all from the comfort and privacy of my disco slippers! The most exercise and fun I've had in a long time!” Annabel

“I had a great time dancing to my favourite tunes with a bunch of other people committed to making the zoom room a dance floor.” Anita

“DIY Disco brought a smile to an otherwise flat dab of a lockdown New Year. Great to dance apart but together thank you great idea.” M Pie

“Can't wait for the next one. Such a great idea We had great fun on NYE. The thing is, you can dance like nobody is watching if you stay out of shot and lovely to see all the smiles. I lasted 2hrs! Surprised myself. Gillian

Please do share with your family and friends.

  • One Foot in Front of the Other

    Wed 27 Jan 2021

I just wanted to send out a little message of positivity following the speech by Boris Johnson today that may have left many of you feeling daunted about the weeks to come.

This year is a far cry from the one we had planned, a million miles away from what we imagined when we returned to school in September, and unrecognisable to our past selves looking forward in to the future. Each date that passes reminds me of things that took place this time last year and serve as a stark reminder of the length of time this has all been going on.  The sacrifices we have all had to make and the challenges we have faced are starting to mount up and I know, like the staff here, you are feeling jaded and tired.

The multiple roles we are juggling - caring for and worrying about our elderly parents, caring for and educating our children, fulfilling the responsibilities of our employment - coupled with a lack of social contact, breaks and activities in our week and outlets to 'let your hair down', are taking a huge toll on mental health. I empathise.

I want to reach out to you all now to tell you how well you are doing.

The work set each week is to provide your children with consistent and high quality opportunities for education. All subjects are catered for and the curriculum remains as broad and balanced as ever. We have been amazed by your response and engagement with this.  Your children are learning and making progress! Work being handed in is of such a high standard and it should be celebrated.

But I want to give you permission to take your foot off the pedal. The stipulation for schools is to provide between 3 and 4 hours of remote learning a day. We are giving you above and beyond this because we do not want to narrow our curriculum. But it may not suit you all. If your child is struggling to complete all the tasks set, if you aren't able to start home learning until 11.00am, if you have to join in the Zoom call while your child eats lunch - then so be it! We will not judge you. We want children returning when we reopen to all happy, settled and confident.

So do not feel alone. You are not. We are still here and ready to support you, as always.

Just keep going, we are nearly there - one foot in front of the other.

  • Lateral Flow Testing of Staff

    Tue 26 Jan 2021

You may have seen on the news that primary school staff are to be regularly tested with something called a lateral flow device (LFD) test. Staff can opt into this weekly regime where they self-test twice a week. The LFDs are to limit the amount of staff who may be asymptomatic and still come into work or the community. This is a positive step in the right direction and should help to reduce the transmission rates across the country; it does come with its own set of logistical issues however.

If a member of staff runs the test and it comes back as positive, we will close the bubble they work in down as a precaution. The staff member then needs to go for a PCR test (polymerase chain reaction) as these are  more accurate and definitive. If that test comes back as negative, then we can reopen the bubble and the member of staff can return. If the PCR test also comes back as positive, we will need to extend the bubble closure for the specific isolation period as directed by PHE and the DfE. I would be in close communication with you to assure you of your next steps if that occurs.

In all instances, we would continue with our remote learning plan and your children will still have the set tasks to complete (see the class page on the website). Do bear in mind that the member of staff who has gone for the test may not be available to respond to any emails for that day.

In light of this new testing regime, it is advisable that you have alternative arrangements in place should we have to close your child’s bubble down.  If we have multiple staff off at any one point and cannot safely run a bubble, they will also have to close.

As you can imagine, this brings new pressures on all staff involved so I thank you in advance for your understanding, patience and planning as you consider what alternative plans you may have to make.

  • Awards and Achievements Assembly

    Thu 21 Jan 2021

As has become somewhat of a tradition here, we had planned an achievements and awards assembly on Friday 12th February. It is customary that children bring in certificates, medals and evidence of any achievements they have had outside of school. These have ranged from Brownie badges to martial arts belts, ice-skating certificates to football trophies. We are obviously in unusual times and few of these hobbies will be taking place at the moment. However, we would still like to celebrate.

If your child has achieved anything in the past 6 months - even if it is taking up a new hobby - then please send in a photograph showing the award or even them in the outfit they wear for their hobby. Accompany this with a short paragraph telling me about the activity and the achievement. Email these to head@langar.notts.sch.uk  and I will put them into a presentation with a voice over for the assembly.

I look forward to hearing what the children have been up to!

  • Food Bank

    Thu 21 Jan 2021

I have often commented on here about the amazing generosity and kindness and people in our community. Selfless acts during this time of pressure and isolation provide a light in the darkness and we are proud to support a cause that has been instigated in the local area.

We are a group of residents from Langar and Barnstone who have come together to help out in the community during a time where some people are experiencing difficulty.

The Coronavirus Community Help Group have identified vulnerable residents who in the current climate are in need of our help. We are running a food bank to help our vulnerable so if you can donate any of the below items they would be greatly received.

If you are in need of the groups help please contact: Heather Whitaker on 07751131061 or hlsentance@hotmail.com

  • Langar in the News

    Fri 15 Jan 2021

We have had a great week and have been so impressed by the way in which you and your children have engaged in this new way of working. We currently have 27 children in school, and our full staff team. The atmosphere is wonderful, as these children access the remote learning packages planned by class teachers and are supported in doing so by our team of TAs.

We are honoured to be able to help our families out in this way; knowing the enormous amount of pressure being put on you at this time, trying to juggle your critical job role and support home learning.

I do hope you will be able to watch East Midlands Today at 6.30pm where we were invited on to discuss the increased numbers of children in school, compared to the number during the last lockdown. This has been the case for schools throughout the country and the news team were interested to find out the impact of this on schools and understand the reasons why this might be the case.

  • Free School Meals Hampers

    Tue 12 Jan 2021

We are pleased to be offering support to families in receipt of free school meals during the current lockdown. All children attending school have access to a hot school meals, and children being kept at home will be given a lunch hamper.

The hampers contain ingredients that could provide a child with five lunches to make up for the ones they are missing at school. Mrs Selby and Mrs Cooper have put these together and they will be ready for collection every Tuesday afternoon.

We wish to acknowledge  the financial strain and pressure caused by the Coronavirus crisis and the burden this can create for families. If you have had a loss of income or change of financial circumstances you may now be eligible for free school meals.  Please follow the link below to check your eligibility for this scheme. If you have any queries , please get in touch via office@langar.notts.sch.uk, or phone the Mrs Whelan during school hours from Monday to Wednesday.

  • Maths, English & Science 'Virtual' After-School options

    Fri 08 Jan 2021

    Good afternoon,

Magical Maths is continuing to provide fun and educational support through their after-school virtual classes, the latest sessions of which start NEXT WEEK.

They have options for Maths, English and Science options, all of which feature games, tricks and activities designed to further engage children with these subjects. The 'hosts' are:

      Professor Poopenshtinken                 Bill Shakeypants

(Maths & Science expert)    (English maestro extraordinaire)

For dates, times and other info:

Children have loved the sessions they've run so far and below is a selection of the feedback:

The virtual sessions have been a life saver during lockdown. Our boys really look forward to them. In their words “we get to do maths while having fun”. They love the magical maths tricks which they can then test out on family and friends after the lesson. Tim has an energised teaching style. He is attentive and great at engaging the children and remembering their names. We highly recommend Magical Maths!

                                                                          Karen Kemp, Grantham

Ruby found the lessons great fun, she looked forward to them each week even the ones in the holidays which was very impressive!

Thank you again and I’ll definitely book more if there are spaces available.

                                                                                Tina Britton, Bristol

Just wanted to say a big thank you, Freya really enjoyed the excited English classes. Without doubt the English zoom sessions have been such a blessing to help with home schooling. The content is great and being part of a group while learning really helped to give her motivation. Would highly recommend!!

                                                                           Anne-Marie, Nottingham

"Toby loved that! First thing he said was 'is it on tomorrow??' Thanks so much! Good for him to learn more skills so he can keep practicing his maths!"

    Lauren Williams, Manchester

"I think the magical maths virtual classes are brilliant - Finley really enjoyed it and has been ‘mind reading’ with his family over FaceTime! Hopefully there are more Zoom classes that he can participate in."

    Finley's mum, Nottinghamshire

The sessions are fun and interactive and have a proven track-record for boosting children’s confidence and enthusiasm for the subjects.

Places on each Zoom session are limited to ensure good interaction levels and with over 350 children having joined in previously - spaces will go fast.

    Yours Mathemagically

We were very happy to rebook Magical Maths, especially after seeing such detailed and positive evaluations from the parents.

Margaret Wiliams, Head Teacher, The Good Shepherd Primary Catholic Academy, Woodthorpe

The children always seem engaged in the club and are clearly enjoying it. The tutors always seem equally engaged and passionate about maths. In addition, parents have been very positive about the club. On parents evening, some parents in my class said that their children go home very enthusiastic about their time at the club and enjoy sharing their experience with their family.

Craig Ashton, Maths Co-Ordinator, Abbey Primary, Forest Town

The children seemed very enthusiastic afterwards and haven't shut up about it since! The tutors appeared well prepared and were there on time and nice and smiley :)

Claire Gregg, Maths Leader, Forest Town PS

I have met with the children who have attended this term's KS2 club and their enthusiasm for what they have been doing was overwhelming!  Equally, I have spoken with Helen Tasker in the KS2 office and she has been very happy with the way in which the clubs have been run and organised.
